Mild Ulcerative Colitis

Normal Colon Lining
Ulcerative Colitis
These pictures show an example of a normal colon lining on the left - pink and healthy. On the right is an example of a patient with mildly active ulcerative colitis. Note that the colon lining is inflamed. The white areas are superficial ulcers which produce a mucous exudate. You can see how this condition causes symptoms of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea. Treatment varies with each individual case, but usually involves drugs to heal inflammation such as Rowasa, Azulfidine, Asacol and Prednisone.
