Normal Appendix Seen at Autopsy

Here is something you don't see every day. This is a photo taken during an autopsy that shows the appendix from outside the colon. This is a normal uninflammed appendix which has a worm-like shape. Nobody knows what purpose the appendix serves and it often has to be removed when it becomes infected. That is called appendicitis.
