Duodenal Ulcer

Active Duodenal Ulcer

Here is a photo taken in the first portion of the small intestine - called the duodenum. The lining is red and inflamed. You can also see an ulcer crater called a duodenal ulcer. Most of these ulcers are caused by the so-called "ulcer bacteria" = Helicobacter pylori. Ulcers such as these can cause pain. If deep enough, they can rupture through a blood vessel and cause internal bleeding. Click here for more information about ulcers.
